Big News come from HTC a mobile devices manufacture, according to PCmag HTC has confirmed that the new Android OS “Gingerbread” will get full support by HTC and will be released on some HTC Android mobile devices.

A spokesperson from HTC said that “We are excited with the new OS, and while HTC will definitely have some phones running this OS, we do not have a specific timeframe for new phones or updates at this time”

This is great news for all HTC Android users who will get the update, but where does that leave everyone else? While some phones like the Motorola Droid are now receiving updates to Android 2.2.1, others, such as the Samsung Galaxy S series, haven’t even received an update to 2.2, let alone Gingerbread. The Android updates available seem to vary just as much as the phones themselves do.

Just this morning, a representative from the LG USA Mobile Facebook account posted, “So, the Optimus line won’t be getting the update because they have a 600-MHz processor, and the minimum requirements for Gingerbread require 1 GHz processor: In other words: it’s not possible to update the processor, unfortunately.”

But this information was quickly refuted by another Facbook user who responded with a link to a Tweet from Romain Guy, one of the official Android developers at Google, who said, “There’s no minimum processor requirement for Gingerbread. Trust me, if there were I’d know.”

Unlike LG, Google has announced that there are plans to release Gingerbread to Nexus One users “in the coming weeks.” This is not much of a surprise, as the T-Mobile Nexus One is Google’s developer phone and had always gotten Android updates promptly. But aside from Google and HTC, we were curious to see if any other companies are planning to introduce Gingerbread to their existing phones.

We contacted a number of cell phone manufacturers and asked them just that. The results were spotty, at best. Motorola referred us to their Android software upgrades page, which doesn’t contain any news of 2.3. And a spokesperson from Metro PCS said that they “can’t discuss unannounced products and updates at this time.” The rest of the manufacturers didn’t respond. This is disappointing, especially given the extensive list of improvements said to be included in the new Gingerbead OS. But as time passes and “Honeycomb” looms on the Horizon, hopefully manufacturers will begin to offer updates to the latest possible OS.
