Streak. He does not need an introduction, that this list has gained much attention among gadget lovers worldwide. Thank you for the launch in the UK last Friday, our first one on this planet to buy a Dell finished Android 1.6 phone from O2. Yes, you heard – Engadget now in possession of two lines, with the oldest still in prototype phase of the original and somewhat unstable. Our sports mat new toys “carbon” finish rather than chrome (no word on future availability, the red versions come in two weeks), and now 399MB rather than 405MB of RAM (as Android System Info app, but it was announced that 512 MB). Anyway, now we have the real deal, there’s a lot to spend, so join us after the break to see if the line is really going to start a new trend.
After the classic mini size 3 / Aero, Dell has decided to plunge into uncharted territory in the second smartphone ever. The result is an unusual form factor – a 10mm thick slab with LCD 800 x 480 five-inch (like the Archos 5 PMP, but with overlapping capacitive touch). Of course, we all saw in February, but our spirit is not diminished a bit – the last line is always the same figure is still very rigid section, and is still in the pocket of our jeans-normal FIT. Our property four months of prototype shows that the line is enough attention seekers, even before we found the interesting people who passed the phone as well. Battery life line can be impressive, but what about its performance as a phone? Software
Well, this meat. As we said earlier, this final firmware make finer and more stable than what we have on our prototype. Dell also has his own skin on the Android OS 1.6 – homescreen icons are placed in shaded boxes, running from the top menu and can be reduced to a favorite bar, and on the top bar you have a button Switching Welcome screen, the notification area, plus regional status , which can be triggered by a simple touch, not an action drag. This makes sense as dragging an icon on a five-inch screen is not exactly ideal.
Regarding the phone dialer, we were a little disappointed that Dell is still using the same dull skin as seen in the prototype – we do not have a problem with the touch keyboard layout, but the overall style has not only completed We also prefer to see pictures of the display next to the number call log contact. In addition, we are shocked that the Streak does not support smart-composition, but once again we have seen that offers this feature on the HTC Android phone. Of course, if you are in a quiet environment, you can still use voice search to access contacts, and you have two options for this: the default search voice application, or application Nuance Voice Control can be executed only by pressing the button on your carkit. They can even take a number dictation, although he never worked for us, and we suspect British accent is to blame.
Another application is preloaded Quickoffice, which not only can view Microsoft Office documents (doc docx,. xls,. xlsx, ppt and .. PPTX). but also a great explorer to open files and other file types with corresponding applications. Only a pity he can not edit Word and Excel files, text and some PowerPoint slides do not do good, but the app is there when you need it. Switch to a built-in applications, we will start with the browser as expected at 1GHz Snapdragon devices, rendering, and pinch zoom is very smooth and fast but we feel it strange that we can not tap to enlarge. As a prototype, we played the final Streak MP4V 480p and 720p encoded videos (up to 7.4Mbps bit rate) without any issues, even if for some reason it will not open for movies that have been encoded in the same way, even 3Mbps and the weak. More disappointing, we were not lucky with one of our H.264 video, although the bandwidth is limited to 3.2Mbps, so we wonder if this codec is supported at all – maybe Archos can pay for Dell’s hand? On a brighter note, we WMV video – VGA and 720p – MP4V video was released as well. Last but not least, YouTube videos look great on screen, five inches, but we have seen a bug: if you’re playing music in the background, the video on YouTube only plays music rather than stop it (like Nexus and the desire to do). We are confident that the team Dell’s talents can easily solve this problem (and we hope that reading what they are).
We will not go too deeply into the music player is almost identical to what we have seen before but we found a few new features. First, the application will automatically get mugshots artists, if we were a little surprised to see Lady Gaga flashing her legs on Artist pages. Second, we find that you can skip tracks by clicking the handsfree button twice, but here’s a warning: we often find myself clicking too fast for the lines to answer correctly, while the iPhone will not be a problem with the same CTR. Before ending our media shout, we would like to mention the lack of FM radio – did not know about you people in the U.S., but we Brits are still living a fantasy audio occasionally during the trip, especially in dense 3G area. We do not know whether the existing hardware, but if the small statues will be created to honor those who can hack. So, now it’s time to complain about other things. First, the keyboard: not every day you see a button on the phone keyboard, and there is good reason – it ruins the symmetry of the phone as ergonomic thumb law must take place over the button while typing. Camera
By looking at our pictures old samples, it seems that Dell makes the sharpness settings on five-megapixel autofocus camera. So, back to the question everyone is asking: What is the line of Dell? According to our humble opinion, this is certainly a smartphone. A big and sexy smartphone that is still in accordance with the bags. Of course, the phone five inches can not be a cup of tea for everyone, but with features moving to the Party by 4.3 inches, consumers might consider the mechanism of succession to the actual screen – comparing the Google Maps screen above shows all possible. We welcome Dell to take a step forward and will limit the size of the pocket, and community well-deserved attention in the world.
